How cupping works in a massage

A therapist places specialized cups on the skin to create gentle suction. Depending on the goal and technique, cups may stay in one place briefly or glide across an area with massage lubricant.

What it may feel like

You may notice pulling, pressure, warmth, or a stretching sensation. Cupping should stay within your comfort level. Tell your therapist right away if the sensation feels too intense so the suction or placement can be adjusted.

Temporary marks are possible

Cupping can leave circular discoloration that may last for several days. These marks are not the goal of treatment and their color does not diagnose a health condition. Discuss upcoming events, skin sensitivity, medications, and relevant health history before treatment.

Is cupping right for everyone?

No technique is appropriate for every person or every area of the body. Your therapist will discuss your goals and screen for reasons to modify or avoid cupping. You can always decline it and receive a massage using other techniques.

Your comfort leads the session. Ask questions and share preferences before or during your massage. Cupping can be adjusted or stopped at any time.
